What is Coldbit?
Coldbit is a metal backup of your Bitcoin/altcoin wallet seed. You can stamp your wallet seed words on Coldbit's metal plates and store safely for long periods of time.
Who is Coldbit for?
Coldbit is for individuals concerned about the long term safety of their wallet seed who are not afraid of swinging a 1.5kg (3.3 lbs.) hammer. It is for people who would rather not worry if their seed words might scramble if a heavy log hits the wallet during a house fire.
What is Coldbit made of?
Coldbit is made of 2 stainless steel (AISI 304) plates. In addition to iron this type of alloy contains 18% chromium for oxidation and corrosion resistance and 8% nickel. The plate on which you stamp your seed words is 4mm thick so that it provides plenty of protection surface for your seed. 4mm means it will not deform when you stamp 24 words on it. It is much harder to bend or break a 4mm thick plate than a 1mm plate (which is closer to what most other cold storage wallets offer these days). The covering plate is 2mm thick. Both plates are secured using 2 nickel binding posts and placed in a metal box.
How much heat can Coldbit handle?
The melting temperature of AISI 304 steel is 1450 °C (2642 °F). However the highest temperature at which the stamped seed is still visible is closer to 1200 °C (2192 °F). The average house fire temperature is about 600 °C (1100 °F) which means Coldbit can handle 2x the temperature of a house fire. You are very unlikely to find a safe that guarantees withstanding this temperature.
Where is Coldbit manufactured?
Coldbit metal plates and testing/supporting plates are manufactured in Poland. The letter stamp sets and metal boxes are made in Germany. All our suppliers are either Polish or German.
Can I stamp the words myself? I've never done it.
If you can swing a 1.5kg (3.3 lbs.) hammer yourself you can stamp your seed. Every Coldbit wallet comes with a testing plate that lets you practice stamping before you stamp the actual seed.
What do I need to stamp my seed?
To stamp the seed you need the Coldbit metal wallet, a letter stamping set (A-Z), a hammer (1.5kg is ideal but 2kg and 1kg will also work), a testing/supporting plate that lets you practice and acts as a support for the wallet during stamping (it's included). You can order it all in our online shop. You also need some kind of a flat, solid and stable surface that can withstand the hammering. A garage table or a piece of concrete (sidewalk or stairs) will work fine.
How long does it take?
Stamping 24 words usually takes about 30 minutes. With enough practice you can do it in 15 minutes.
I don't think I'll be able to stamp the words myself with a hammer.
An alternative to stamping is engraving with a Dremel tool. We regard stamping as a superior method to any other method because it creates the deepest marks in the metal. The deepest marks mean the longest time it survives. Engraving with a Dremel doesn't create marks as deep as stamping but is still superior to eg. laser etching (not to mention paper storage) so engraving can be considered in case you want to avoid stamping. We do not offer a Dremel engraving tool in our online shop though. You have to find it elsewhere.
What payment methods are accepted?
We accept Bitcoin payments (both on-chain and over Lightning Network) and regular credit card transactions. We use BTCPayServer to process Bitcoin transactions and Braintree to process credit card transactions.
How can I pay using Lightning Network ?
Bitcoin Lightning Network on mainnet is in the early stages of development. Channel liquidity is relatively low and there are few nodes that support routing of mid/high value transactions. Sending/receiving 0.02 BTC via Lightning is a challenge these days but sending/receiving 0.005 BTC works most of the time. However things change rapidly and situation will improve with time/effort and capital people invest in the Lightning Network. That being said if you want to pay for Coldbit wallet via Lightning the most reliable recommendation we can give is "connect to our node with enough channel balance to cover the payment". 0.02 BTC is a good start, you should increase it accordingly to your sending/receiving needs on the Lightning Network. Our node is here: firstname.lastname@example.org:9735
